ATHLETIC PROGRAM GUIDELINES & PHILOSOPHY
Overall Philosophy
My goal is to implement an athletic program that emphasizes hard work by all, goal setting by coaches and players, discipline, teamwork, and pride in oneself both on and off the field. I will be loyal to all superiors and will work closely and professionally with all people related to the program. The coaching staff will be expected to develop the skills of the athletes preparing them to compete at a high level and achieve great success. The staff will also provide healthful character building experiences teaching sportsmanship, accountability and self-confidence.
Expectations of Coaches
Head coaches and assistants must be fully prepared to coach their sport and position to the best of their ability as well as successfully teach the essential fundamentals and technique to their athletes. All coaches should be loyal to the administration in all policies, rules and regulations. Coaches must be able to work together with all sports on all levels. Coaches are counted on to work closely with athletes to ensure student academic success and set a good example for all athletes and the community as a teacher, coach and citizen. It is imperative to have great teachers and coaches at every level to guarantee continued success.
Academics/Scholarships
Athletes attend school for the primary purpose of receiving instruction and development in their academic endeavors. Academics are the highest priority and will be emphasized daily. No student will be given preferential treatment or consideration in academic matters solely because he or she is a student-athlete. Every effort will be made to compile an “Athletic Profile” of the most current, accurate and detailed information available for all athletes interested in seeking athletic scholarships. This “snapshot” of the athlete is a multi-media presentation including statistics, highlight tape and regular game film.
Public Relations
The coaching staff will represent Kingwood High School in a highly professional manner. The staff will maintain great relationships with each other, athletes, parents, the community, booster clubs and the media. Good relations between athletes, coaches, and the public are essential for any successful program.
Discipline
Every successful organization must be well disciplined. Coaches will teach and support the standards to be followed by team members. Expectations concerning class work, eligibility rules, general behavior, appearance, training rules, and locker room procedures are examples of items that will be clearly defined. Student discipline will be consistent with the philosophy of HISD. Any athlete who chooses not to abide by the expectations will be subject to disciplinary action and may be dismissed from the program. Athletes in violation of school policies regarding drugs and alcohol will receive punishment in accordance with district policy.
Multi-Sport Athletes
The athletic program will afford all athletes the opportunity to participate in as many activities as their skills and schedules permit. Every coach will encourage this level of participation and cooperation. Any coach found to be recruiting an athlete for the sole purpose of specializing in a single sport would be subject to disciplinary action.
Other School Programs
Many organizations need the services of athletes. Coaches will be considerate with players below the varsity level when other teachers need their time (i.e. tutorials, band, drama, etc.). For varsity athletes, coaches will make allowances when possible. Above all, coaches will communicate directly and in a timely manner with the fellow teachers involved.
Coaching Clinics
All coaches will have the opportunity to attend clinics in an effort to keep abreast of current techniques and gain expertise in their field. The number of clinics a coach may attend will be determined by the approval of the athletic budget and the monies it provides the clinics.
Middle School Program
The successful high school program begins with a great middle school program. Athletes need proper guidance in academics and athletics at this level to establish a firm foundation in the classroom and on the field. The middle school program will have three main purposes:
1. Allow as many students as possible the experience of competing in athletics as part of their educational process. Coaches at this level must make athletics a positive experience, developing character, a sense of sportsmanship and fair play.
2. Prepare as many athletes as possible for competition in the high school program. Every player who attends every required practice and exhibits a genuine effort will participate in every competition.
3. Implement the same program utilized at the high school and teaches the game at a more fundamental level. It is important for athletes to come up through the athletic ranks under the same system to ensure the continuity of a successful program. The head coach will monitor the middle school programs and varsity coaches will regularly visit with middle school coaches and attend games and practices whenever possible.
EXPECTATIONS OF FOOTBALL COACHES
In order for us to have a successful program, all coaches must be on the same page at all times. We must all strive to be the BEST COACH IN THE COUNTRY in our area of expertise. Be a better coach this year than you were last year, and not just because you have coached another year. Strive to improve daily. If we know to do something and fail to do it, someone else should have our jobs.
A COACH WHO IS STRIVING TO BE THE BEST:
KEEPS HIS PRIORITIES IN ORDER - Faith- Family- Career- Other
IS LOYAL AND HONEST - We must be extremely loyal and honest to each other, to our players and to our school. Loyalty builds trust within the program and in effect builds the program to ultimate success.
IS PASSIONATE ABOUT COACHING AND WINNING - Passion for your craft resonates in your players. Do all you can to help each team win but keep everything in perspective.
MAKES AN IMPACT ON STUDENTS LIVES - Teach life lessons through football. Affirm the players and never belittle them. Help them to become men. Be a great example and get to know the kids…not just on the field.
IS A GREAT TEACHER - In the classroom and on the field. Games are not won by how much the coaches know, but what the players have learned and can execute.
HAS A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AT ALL TIMES - A positive attitude by the coaching staff will instill confidence in the players.
LOOKS FOR WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE - If something needs to be done, you do it. Do not look to see who has been assigned that particular responsibility. We are all responsible for getting the job done and for giving our players the best possible opportunity to be successful. All coaches will help with laundry, cleanup, etc.
HAS A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE GAME - Stay on top of the game. Attend clinics, visit with other coaches, read books, etc. The game is always changing so we must adapt.
IS PUNCTUAL - Do not waste other peoples’ valuable time. Be present at least 10 minutes before a scheduled meeting. Arrive at least one hour before the players are required to be in practice (unless coming from class).
IS ALWAYS PREPARED - For meetings, practices, games, class, etc.
TAKES NOTES - You can remember about 30% of what you hear. If you write it down, you can remember about 60%. If you write it down and keep it, you have the ability to recall 100% of what you need.
IS DEMANDING - Push your players to do their best. Hold them a notch above the normal student.
SPENDS TIME WITH HIS PLAYERS - Make an effort to get to know your players off the field. Personally visit with your position players at all levels every day before and/or after practice. Let them know you care about them. Treat your players like you would want to be treated. They are all special.
CAN EVALUATE TALENT AND IDENTIFY WINNERS - Look for guys who are winners. Play the players you trust will make the plays. The best athlete may not always be the best player. For all sub-varsity players, think of their future.
RECOGNIZES EFFORT - Find the players that display great effort. Find a way to get that player onto the field. They will help you win football games.
PAYS ATTENTION TO DETAILS - Little things can make a huge difference.
DOES THINGS RIGHT THE FIRST TIME - If you do not have time to do it correctly, how are you going to find time to do it again?
IS A MOTIVATOR - Find the best ways to motivate your players to achieve success. All kids are different so find out what works best with your individual players.
IS A POSITIVE ROLE MODEL - Never curse at a player. Our players should look up to us as great men and great citizens.
COACHES TO HIS PERSONALITY - Be you and not someone else. Do your job to the best of your ability and put your personality into it.
DOES NOT OVER COACH - Teach the athlete how to do it, and then let them play the game. They will be more relaxed if they do not have to think about too many things.
KNOWS HOW TO GIVE AND ACCEPT CRITICISM - All criticism needs to be constructive. Give it tactfully and receive it with the right attitude.
IS COMMITED TO THE PROGRAM - Commit yourself both in and out of season to make
Kingwood High School Football the best program in Texas.
DOES A GREAT JOB IN THE CLASSROOM - All athletic coaches should be the best teachers in the building.
IS VISIBLE - Make an effort to get to know the teachers, administration, support staff, etc. Visit with teachers at faculty meetings and other functions, and always be an ambassador for football and athletics.
IS WILLING TO DO EXTRA DUTIES - Display a good attitude when asked to help with activities in other sports.
USES COMMON SENSE - Know right from wrong and do right! Never put anything in an e-mail that you would not want to see printed in the newspaper.
